Panic attacks
Many people experience some mild sensations when they feel anxious about something, but a panic attack is much more intense than usual. If you experience a sudden and intense surge of fear it might be symptoms of a panic attack. Panic attacks are the result of a catastrophic misinterpretation of normal physical sensations of fear.
A panic attack can be very frightening and you may feel a strong desire to escape the situation or to seek emergency assistance but actually panic attacks are harmless.
Panic disorder is used to describe the condition where the person develops a persistent fear of having another attack or worries about the consequences of the attack. Many people change their behaviour to try to prevent panic attacks. Some people are affected so much that they try to avoid any place where it might be difficult to get help or to escape from. When this avoidance is severe it is called agoraphobia.
Panic and anxiety can affect any kind of person at any stage of their life. In fact, it is estimated that about 1 in every 30 people experience significant panic at some time in their life. So remember, you are not alone.
Other symptoms may include:
- A racing heartbeat
- Feeling faint, dizzy or lightheaded
- Feeling that you are losing control
- Sweating, trembling or shaking
- Shortness of breath or breathing very quickly
- Tingling sensation in fingers or lips
- Feeling sick or nauseous
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is the main evidence-based model of therapy to treat panic attacks and panic disorder. This involves a so-called Psychoeducation component where you learn about why panic attacks happen and how to overcome them. It also involves understanding how the avoidant and safety behaviours you are using are keeping the problem going. In addition, you will get ideas and support on how to drop those behaviours and lose the fear of the physical sensations in a panic attack so that you can overcome them.
At the Meyer Therapy Practice we have numerous therapists that specialise in treating these conditions. We offer a free no obligation phone consultation with one of the clinical directors to discuss your difficulties and match you to the right clinician for your needs.
