Counselling Psychologist

Dr Sofia Sheikh is an HCPC-registered and Chartered Counselling Psychologist with experience working with adolescents and adults across NHS services and private practice. Her background includes work in adult autism, eating disorders, oncology, cardiology, long-term physical health conditions and primary care mental health.

Sofia offers a warm, compassionate and non-judgemental space where people can feel listened to, understood and supported. She recognises that starting therapy can feel like a big step and aims to help people feel at ease as they begin to explore what has brought them to therapy.

Her approach is integrative, which means she draws on different therapeutic approaches according to each person’s needs, experiences and goals. These include Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), psychodynamic psychotherapy, person-centred therapy, systemic therapy and enhanced Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for eating disorders (CBT-E).

Sofia works collaboratively with people to help them make sense of their experiences, understand patterns that may be keeping them stuck and find new ways of coping and moving forward.

Sofia understands Urdu and Hindi fluently, although therapy is conducted in English.

Some of the difficulties Sofia can help with include:

  • Anxiety, excessive worry and Generalised Anxiety Disorder (GAD)
  • Panic attacks and panic disorder
  • Depression and low mood
  • Stress, burnout and workplace or performance-related stress
  • Phobias and health anxiety
  • Trauma and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
  • Low self-esteem, perfectionism and self-criticism
  • Loneliness and isolation
  • Emotional and practical challenges associated with autism and ADHD
  • Eating difficulties, body image concerns and Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD)
  • Difficulties in relationships, family relationships and connecting with others
  • Loss and bereavement
  • Adjusting to significant life changes
  • The emotional impact of long-term physical health conditions

This is not an exhaustive list, and people are welcome to contact The Meyer Therapy Practice to discuss the support they are looking for.
